A Notice from NYC Muslim Center Regarding Coronavirus

Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

As you know, there is a virus spreading worldwide, known as Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). It started in Wuhan City, China, and is now present in many parts of the US, including New York City.

NYC Muslim Center (FKAD Institute, The Wellspring Schools, and Masjid Eesa Ibn Maryam) is dedicated to the safety of our community during this time.

This virus spreads through respiratory fluids: coughing, sneezing, saliva, or nasal discharge. As of now, there are no known treatments or vaccines. As such, prevention is of utmost importance, especially to prevent those with known or suspected cases of infection from spreading it to others.

People with COVID-19 have symptoms similar to other viral respiratory illnesses, such as fever, cough, runny nose, and trouble breathing. Most cases have a mild illness, similar to the flu.

If you have the above symptoms, there are some measures you can take. Wearing a mask when sick can help prevent spreading infection, but people who are well, do not have a significant benefit from wearing a mask for prevention. Drink plenty of fluids and rest. If you feel you may have been in contact with COVID-19, please call your doctor. If you have traveled recently to a high-risk area, namely China, Italy, Japan, South Korea, or Iran in the last few weeks, you should watch for symptoms. If you have any viral symptoms, it is best to consult with your doctor.

To minimize the spread of COVID-19, everyone should wash their hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water. If coughing, make sure to cough into your elbow and discard all tissues after they are used.

In summary, please keep in mind the following advice:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Limit shaking hands, kissing, and other close contacts, especially if someone is sick.
  • If you are sick with the above symptoms, please refrain from attending the NYCMC facilities (Masjid 'Eesa ibn Maryam, The Wellspring Schools, FKAD Institute ADP courses, Saturday Children’s Program, Quran Memorization Program, etc) to avoid the spread of infection.
  • If you have symptoms, it is advisable to wear a mask to prevent spreading infection.
  • Children who are sick with the above symptoms should consult with their pediatrician regarding attending school.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Try to limit or avoid international and domestic travel unless necessary.
Given the constantly changing situation nationally and internationally regarding COVID, NYCMC will be following the most updated recommendations from state and national organizations, and update our policies accordingly.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation and ask Allah to keep our community safe during this challenging time.
